By now you have probably heard the news about the hugely influential Evangelist Ted Haggard.
Keep in mind that this is the man who advises the Bush White House weekly, condemns homosexuality daily and is now accused of buying drugs and hooking up with a gay prostitute monthly. A busy Red indeed.
I wasn't going to write about this sordid tale until I saw this bizarre video. It's an excerpt from one of his 'sermons' featured in the movie Jesus Camp. Watching the way this husband and father, who regularly paid a gay prostitute, talks about these very subjects is chilling. It reminds me of two long held beliefs. First, the old stereotype of homo-phobics being latent gays might have some merit. Second, those claiming righteousness in the political arena (which Haggards close ties to the Republicans more than qualifies him) should be viewed with a great deal of scepticism.

I predict that Republicans will hold both the House and Senate. My reason is that
I do not, and never have, believed that Republican voters are principle driven.
Sure, they talk a good game about fiscal responsibility, honesty, compassion,
support of the military, smaller government, Christian values, uniting not
dividing...etc. But the Republicans have not delivered. Never have. Yet Red
voters still have still given their support to the GOP election after election.
I believe most Republican voters like to THINK they have principles when in
practice they could not care less. They like to feel that they support the good
guys but have never bothered to hold their people to account. Simply put, Red
voters are not principled - they are partisans. The GOP knows that tossing a little
divisive rhetoric close to the election is all it will take to make their supporters
forget how badly they have been conned over the years. Even the most casual
observer of politics can see that the GOP has not delivered on what they have
been promising over the past generation. Principled voters would have tossed
them out years ago. Partisan voter, though, have kept them in. I expect a repeat
this week.
I am not your typical Democrat, liberal or anything else. I certainly have never
and would never lionize the Democratic Party. (If someone wants to argue that
being "anti"-something is a poor substitute for having a plan of my own - I would
agree. But after years of following politics, I have come to the frightening
conclusion that the modern Republican Party is un-American and a grave
danger to this nation and the world. I have seen friends and family drawn into
this movement only give up rational thinking while professing great patriotism
and morality. I have seen politicians in this party rip away our rights and blatantly
lie about the most important things imaginable. I have seen good people
(principled people) conned by the GOP year after year. That’s why I have
chosen to use all my energies to expose their hypocrisy and ill intent.)
My opinion about Republican voters being unprincipled is based on the fact that
their party’s actions consistently contradict their mighty rhetoric. The party of
George W. Bush, Ted Haggard, and Rush Limbaugh has boasted, bragged and
preached about their superior values. The last several elections (since at least
1994) have been focused on this supposed value difference between the
parties. Come Wednesday, I will happily admit I was wrong to say that Red voters
are unprincipled if they turn out the politicians who have been misleading them
all these years. But if they choose to continue to elect these wolves in sheep
clothing then I will have nothing to take back. Those who stick by the
Republicans NOW after all the evidence – are not principled. These folks, the
ones who never seem to be reflected in polls, will dutifully march to vote on
Tuesday and reelect Republicans. Then they'll go home and think about how
high and mighty they are. But really they are just blind partisans, followers
through and through.
