For me to decide to purchase something fancy takes a lot of doing. Unusually I go for the simpler things in life. My biggest expense has always been food and drink. I like to think of myself as a practical sort of guy.
But this new smart phone has me all ga ga. It's the new Treo 680. I like to think it's a practical sort of phone. Now, for those of you not up to date on the latest in phone technology, the Treo is a smart phone. That is to say, it is a device that can do it all from being a calendar, music device, mini computer and of course phone. You can get on line with or without a wi fi signal. You can do word processing and spreadsheets. You can transfer flies from your computer to the phone. And you can look cool doing it.
I have used the Treo 700w and 650. I prefer the 650. The 700w is the newest incarnation of the Treo and looked at as the future of smart phone technology. It uses Microsoft windows, which seems to mean that you have to take an extra step or two to do get anything done. The 700 and its forthcoming next generations may be the wave of the future but for now it is just a pain in the neck to use. Most people I know who have it sort of regret getting it.
Instead of windows technology the 650 and the new 680 use a PALM operating system which is much simpler, faster and in my opinion just as useful as the 700's. The 650 has been out a while and if you have seen someone using a Treo chances are it is a 650. People I know with this are very happy with it (the only issue is that they wonder what they are missing with 700 which is really nothing at all)
Now they have the 680. That's the phone I want. It was announced a couple months ago that this new phone would hit the streets, but it is still nowhere to be found. The 680 uses the easy PALM operating system, has some of the features of the 700 that the 650 doesn't, looses the antenna, is slightly smaller and comes in four fantastic colors. I have been ready for weeks to ditch my old malfunctioning clamshell phone to get one. But it's release is still delayed.
For someone like me, who hates to make major purchases, this is so annoying. I have talked myself into getting one of these, convinced myself that it is something I need (not just want) and they string out the introduction for weeks. I know in a few months these phone will be everywhere and an even newer generation will be introduced to tempt the consumer. But for now I just want my 680 (orange I think - or "copper" as they call it) the sooner the better.
