(Reuters) -- A single, gigantic asteroid slammed into Earth 65 million years ago, dooming the dinosaurs and many other
species, scientists said on Thursday in a new study rebutting theories that multiple impacts did the deed.

An examination of rock sediments drilled from five sites at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean strongly supports the notion that
one massive hunk of space rock caused the mass extinction, a research team led by University of Missouri-Columbia geology
professor Ken MacLeod found.

EXPLANATION!
DISCOVERY!
That's what happened 8,000 years ago in Sicily when
Mt. Etna erupted and produced an avalanche that hurled
six cubic miles of dirt and rock into the water. The
mountain of rubble swept into the sea at more than 200
mph, pulverized the sea bed and changed thick layers of
soft marine sediment into jelly. It also started an
underwater mudslide that flowed for hundreds of miles.
Researchers at the National Institute of Geology and
Volcanolgy in Italy have also linked the tsunami with the
mysterious abandonment of Atlit-Yam, a Neolithic village
located along the coast of present-day Israel.
Imagine a volcano avalanche
generated tsunami 10 stories high
containing enough sediment and
rock to cover the entire island of
Manhattan with a layer of debris
thicker than the height of
the Empire State Building.
There have been some fascinating stories in Science news lately that have me thinking in a "big picture" sort of way.
Findings of
ancient computers that show levels of complexity ten centuries ahead of it's time, the realization that dinosaurs
(and many other animal and plant life) became
extinct because of a single asteroid, and the discovery by reenactment that a
tsunami 6,000 years ago wiped out vast areas of the Mediterranean.  We live on a very fragile planet and life here has a very
cyclical way about it.  We were born here but we can't stay forever. Sooner or later Earth is going to clear the decks again.
Will we have evolved enough by then to save ourselves?   We better stop trying to find new and exciting ways to kill each
other and start working to figure out a way to
move from this temporary home. Otherwise it will all have to all start over again.
.Wouldn't that be a waste of time.
A leader of the new Democratic Congress, business travelers and privacy advocates expressed outrage
Friday over the unannounced assignment of terrorism risk assessments to American international travelers
by a computerized system managed from an unmarked, two-story brick building in Northern Virginia
Winter has arrived in New York City with temperatures dipping into the 20's on Tuesday Morning.  We haven't had any snow yet
this season but maybe later this week.  I am once again looking for another format for the website.  This one allows me to create
pages from scratch.  But it takes more time than I have so rather than having to start with a blank slate everyday I want to find a
format that will allow me to enter pictures and text more quickly.
Blogger is OK but I want to see if something even better is out
there.  I figure it will be better to give up a little on the ascetics of the site if I can post more frequent updates.
